Safety First! We perform prescribed fires in multiple states at the same time with our trained crews.
Prescribed fires stimulate the ecosystems and make them more productive.
The purpose of prescribed fire, also known as controlled burn, is to remove debris and allow the plants more access to sunlight. Our native plants and wildlife are not fire tolerant they are fire dependent. Removing fire from ecosystem management causes a rapid drop in productivity and a loss of biodiversity. It also helps to identify and treat populations of invasive species because the duff is removed that hides them. It also controls invasive brush by controlling its above ground growth.
Prescribed fire is a key part of a stewardship plan. The burn season starts in mid-October and ends in late April. We burn when the conditions are right for your site. There are limited burn days due to it being so dependent on warm dry weather that scheduling burns is typically a 72 hour notice. Our highly trained crews take safety precautions and use only our own employees and our own Certified Prescribed Burn Managers. Our crews are trained to the federal standard found in the National Wildfire Coordinating Group or NWCG. We use only our own trucks and equipment. We never hire subcontractors or use volunteers. We will never go through with the prescribed fire if we feel that it is at all unsafe. Once we have built out a written plan for the fire and have received all needed permits and permissions, we can safely start the process.
Our crew will perform prescribed fires for areas in and around Lake Forest, IL, Barrington, IL, Naperville, IL, and nearby cities and communities.
Our safety precautions include a plan, permits, permissions, signage, & notifications that are documented in a written process.
At Pizzo & Associates, Ltd., there is nothing more important than the safety of our crew, customers, and landscapes. We take many precautions and steps before performing a controlled burn. If we believe that there is any form of danger that might come from going through with the project, we will not do it.
Our specialists will use their extensive knowledge and training to determine if the project is the right candidate for a prescribed burn. If so, our next steps include:
- Writing up a detailed plan of how your specific process will be implemented. This ensures that everybody involved is on the same page and can refer to the plan at any time.
- Obtaining any needed permits and permissions specific to the area.
- Using specialized fire-suppression equipment to further ensure the safety of every person as well as the landscape.
Our certified prescribed burn managers will be there every step of the way.
It is extremely important that you feel confident with the team that you choose to perform your prescribed fire; fire is not something to feel wishy-washy about. That is why we make it clear to our customers that we are a highly qualified and trustworthy team. At Pizzo & Associates, Ltd., we have insurance specifically for prescribed fires as well as a highly-trained team.
Our fire crew is trained to the federal standard, meaning that each member has taken a 32-hour class for certification. Pizzo is certified to teach fire training as well. Many crew members burning for local governments have been trained by Pizzo. In addition to federal standard training, we also use our own state-certified prescribed burn managers. These managers, as well as our trained and experienced burn crew, will supervise every burn project and be there every step of the way.
Prescribed fires will benefit your land by removing over-wintered debris, exposing invasive species and more.
Many landowners do not think of fires as a way to improve the health of their property. But, as long as you have the right people doing it, prescribed fires are a great tool to add to your stewardship process. We describe our fires as part of a spring/fall cleanup and rely on it as an effective way to take care of the ecosystems in our area. Below are a few of the many benefits that a prescribed fire will offer:
- It will remove debris from your land and let the sunshine in. This will allow your vegetation to receive better access to life-giving sunlight.
- It will help manage weeds and increase plant diversity
- It will enhance the beauty of your land
- It helps us find invasive plants that you might not have found otherwise
- It will increase the effectiveness of stewardship processes
- Fall fires reduce the amount of time that vegetation takes to turn green in the spring
- Spring fires remove over-wintered debris and the sites green up faster
